Category of terms related to various gene transfer study designs.

Attenuated Listeria monocytogenes strain CRS-207 (inlB & actA deleted )
CRS-207 is a live attenuated strain of Listeria monocytogenes genomically deleted for the entire coding sequence of two virulence-determinant genes inlB and actA. These two genes facilitate invasion of non-phagocytic cells and cell-to-cell spread, respectively. The combined deletion of these two genes results in more than a 1,000-fold decrease in virulence as measured in a mouse model.

Attenuated Listeria monocytogenes strain XFL-7 (prfA modified)
This strain of Listeria is attenuated by modification of the prfA gene, a major pluripotent virulence factor that is required for replication. The modified prfA gene results in a partial complementation of function that increases the LD50 in mice by 3 logs in comparison to wild-type.

Attenuated Salmonella typhimurium strain VNP20029
Stably transduced Salmonella strain (VNP20009) that contains the E. coli Cytosine Deaminase gene in the bacterial chromosome locus msbB.

Blinded Study Agent
For use in double-blind studies. Blinded studies are designed to minimize bias when evaluating study end-points by masking the identity of the agent to those receiving it (as in a single blind) OR to both the individual administering the agent AND the recipient of that agent (a double blind).
Control Arm Agent
Term is used in gene transfer [and other] studies where a comparison between the effects of a recombinant agent and a non-recombinant study agent (e.g. small molecule drug) is desired. Similar to "Standard of Care" (q.v) - but may not denote a documented / accepted treatment option for a given disorder.

Established allogeneic adenocarcinoma cells
Adenocarcinoma cells from an individual that demonstrate the potential for indefinite subculture in vitro for implantation into another individual.
Established allogeneic breast adenocarcinoma cells MDA-MB-231
The cell line is aneuploid female, with chromosome counts in the near-triploid range. Normal chromosomes N8 and N15 were absent. Eleven stable rearranged marker chromosomes are noted as well as unassignable chromosomes in addition to the majority of autosomes that are trisomic.

Established allogeneic breast cancer cells
Breast cancer cells from an individual that demonstrate the potential for indefinite subculture in vitro that are re-implanted into another individual from the same species
